In this content, you can learn of the following basic electronics Questions.
(1) What is unregulated power supply ?
Or
What do you mean by unregulated power supply ?
(2) What is the demerits of unregulated power supply ?
UNREGULATED POWER SUPPLY
• A unregulated power supply is one that can not maintain constant output voltage against the variation in input voltage, load current and temperature.
OR
• A unregulated power supply is a circuit which output voltage is not constant which change with change in either input voltage, load current and temperature.
• Unregulated dc power supply circuit consist of three basic element namely a transformer, a rectifier and a filter.
• It do not consist of voltage regulator in the output stage. In the below figure, It shows the block diagram of unregulated dc power supply system.
• A full wave rectifier is than convert the ac output voltage signal into pulsating dc signal dc signal and passes to filter circuit.
• The filter is used after the rectifier which eliminated some of the ripple (ac component) from the rectifier output signal.
• In this system, the ac voltage is connected to a step-down transformer to down the level of supply voltage to the desired voltage level.
• The combination of rectifier and filter can produce a dc voltage which is almost pure ( ice ripple free). However the problem with this type of power supply is that it's output voltage will not remain constant. The output voltage change with change in input voltage or load current or temperature.
Demerits of unregulated power supply
• Output voltage does not remain constant.
• The output contain ripple.
• The ripple content in the output will increase with increase in the load current.
• The output voltage changes due to change in any of the following parameters.
(a) Input voltage
(b) Load current
(c) Temperature
